The K-1 is also capable of shooting Full HD 1080/30p video, but videography definitely isn’t its strong suit, with limited support tools and no clean HDMI output. Colors are pleasing, though greens and reds can appear iridescent, and skin tones somewhat greenish. JPEGs don't fare as well: images are soft due to lack of sharpening, and very subtle noise reduction at high ISO means that while detail is retained, images are noisy. Even outside of this mode, Raw image quality is very good, with nearly chart-topping base ISO dynamic range, and very low noise in low light. Moving scene elements can cause artifacts in this mode though, and it's only for tripod-based work. This removes the need for de-mosaicing, reducing moiré and noise, while increasing detail and dynamic range. Where the K-1 really shines is in Pixel Shift Resolution mode, where the sensor is shifted minutely across four exposures to record color information at each pixel location. Battery life is rated at 760 shots per charge which, while better than mirrorless models, falls behind most DSLRs. The K-1 is rated to shoot continuously at 4.4 fps, which is average for its class. Unfortunately, subject tracking is unreliable, and even continuous AF with a single point can struggle to maintain focus on an approaching or receding subject. An 86,000-pixel RGB metering system allows for scene analysis and subject detection so the AF system can automatically select the correct points to stay on your subject in continuous AF. Its 33 points (25 cross-type) offer limited frame coverage, with the central three points offering higher precision when used with F2.8 or faster lenses. While the AF system of the K-1 can't keep up with some of its peers, it's an improvement over previous Pentax DSLRs. "The K-1 offers a number of impressive features that will make landscape shooters rejoice, and at a very affordable price point." The exterior LED lighting is one of the most interesting features on the K-1: LEDs can be found directly behind the LCD screen, directly above the lens mount, in the memory card slot and in the battery compartment. The 3.2" 'cross-tilt' LCD screen makes shooting below the waist or in challenging settings effortless. The camera is weather-sealed and is rated down to temperatures of -10C/+14F. The K-1's well thought-out ergonomics make this camera very comfortable to shoot with whether mounted on a tripod or in your hand. As you'd expect, it also accepts any K-mount Pentax lens (albeit with limitations for older manual focus optics). It boasts a 36MP CMOS sensor and lots of innovative and useful features, such as unique exterior LED lighting and clever sensor-shift shooting modes that aren’t found on any other full frame DSLRs at this price point. The K-1 is Pentax’s long-awaited full-frame DSLR.
